My name is Emma and I’m a freelance marketing manager. I help ambitious B2B businesses grow by acting as an outsourced senior marketing partner. I provide the marketing consultancy you need, paired with hands-on tactical marketing work too.
I focus on three key areas
1. Lead generation & conversion
2. Improving marketing positioning & messaging
3. Building reputation and credibility
I have more than 24 years' experience in devising robust, budget-focussed marketing and PR strategies and delivering the work that brings them to life.
Marketing only works when it's clever, commercially-focussed and consistent.
My one-day-a-week model is designed for businesses that need senior-level outsourced marketing leadership and quality tactical delivery on an ongoing basis, but don't want the cost of a full-time senior hire.
I'll help you:
develop a stronger, more compelling proposition & stand out more clearly from competitors
generate and convert more of the right kind of leads
build the profile of your brand and enhance your reputation
With 24+ years' strategic and tactical marketing experience, you'll get high-quality marketing activity delivered quickly and consistently without wasted time or effort.
Working with me also means your marketing won’t stall between bursts of activity, it'll build steadily over time.
In the past, I've worked with brands like Specsavers, easyJet, Panasonic, M&S and Lambert Smith Hampton and Daisy Group. But these days, I prefer to work with B2B businesses that know that they could be growing faster, but only have a small, junior in-house marketing team or no marketing support at all.
You may be:
Doing lots of marketing activity but not seeing enough commercial benefit from it
Lacking in internal resource or experience to do continuous marketing activity that you know would speed up your business growth
While I'm happy to work with any ambitious B2B business, I have more experience in:
Professional services (especially legal),
If your company feels like it’s plateauing or not growing fast enough, I'll help you sharpen up your strategy and messaging, by acting as your freelance marketing manager. I can work alone or support your existing marketing staff.

When you're busy running a business, it can be hard to see the wood for the trees. What looks 'okay' to you, might be turning away your ideal clients. I offer a free attractiveness marketing audit to help you see your business through your target customers' eyes.
Once you have clarity on how successful your marketing is, you’ll know if you need help and what with.

There are three different ways I can support businesses:
This is a three-step process that
makes it clearer why potential clients should want to work with your business
gets everyone in your business on the same page about what you should be saying and why
communicates your competitive advantage/USP to your target clients more effectively.
By making the benefits of working with you clearer, you'll find it easier to generate more quality leads and convert them.
I will act as your freelance marketing manager and help you implement changes from the consultancy process, and generally improve your marketing outputs and results. This involves a range of key complementary marketing disciplines as part of a single predictable monthly fee - all commonly used by SMEs because they don't require a huge advertising budget to deliver great results (if they're done properly).
NB: You can use all or just one of the marketing services, for example if you already have an in-house marketer who needs additional support with strategic marketing, or things like SEO, PR or copywriting.
I'll help you write stronger award submissions that are more likely to win and get your business the recognition it deserves.

Choosing to outsource your marketing/PR can feel like a fairly big step for some businesses, but few of those that take the decision to outsource, regret it.
For many businesses, it can be hard to see the wood for the trees, and an external advisor brings a fresh perspective to improving your marketing and sales.
For businesses with a small marketing team, it can feel like a constant uphill battle to get the required amount of work done. An outsourced marketing manager can offer more than just an extra pair of hands. They can give clear experience-based strategic direction and can also be relied upon to deliver work to an excellent standard.
If the people/person doing your in-house marketing has less than 10 years' experience, then it's likely they'll still be 'learning the ropes' and could make costly mistakes. An outsourced marketing manager can offer strategic advice and coaching to help them improve the quality of their work/outputs.
Maybe you don't have a dedicated member of staff at all and have a couple of team members taking on marketing responsibilities intermittently alongside other roles. Unfortunately, this usually leads to inconsistent efforts, unpolished activity and outputs, and a lack of clear strategy. An outsourced marketing manager can take the pressure off them, allowing them to focus on their main role, and improve the quality of the marketing activity too.
By outsourcing your marketing, you're not just buying time, you're investing in a higher standard of work that is focussed on your business objectives and growth. That equates to less work pressure, fewer late nights at your desk, and a better work/life balance.
Working with an experienced marketer like myself means you're gaining a flexible partner to bounce ideas off, and who can produce top-tier results in a short amount of time. In summary, it'll free you and your team up to focus on what you do best - building your business - and make you more likely to succeed.
Not sure you need to outsource? Why not get a free audit to see how attractive your business is to your target customers at the moment?
Most SMEs struggle to get results from their marketing because it’s done in sporadic "bursts" rather than consistently. By committing to having a freelance marketing manager doing one dedicated day of intensive activity every week, you'll ensure that your marketing never stops moving. This consistency is what builds a predictable pipeline.
Hiring an outsourced marketing manager with my level of experience on a full-time basis is prohibitively expensive for most SMEs. Working with me for just one day a week is more affordable. It means you get a senior level, experienced marketer who knows what they're doing, can give strategic direction, and can turn quality work around quickly with the minimum of fuss.
It will also limit the time commitment you need to spend on marketing, as I'll devise a plan, ask you to sign it off, then I'll just get on with doing the work.
It’s both. I provide the high-level strategy you would expect from a marketing consultant, but unlike a pure consultant, I don't stop at the advice. As your freelance marketing manager, I take full responsibility for the implementation and results, ensuring your plan actually happens.
Outsourcing your marketing allows you to access senior-level strategy and execution without the overhead of a full-time hire. It's a pragmatic way for B2B businesses to ensure they get consistent, professional activity that drives lead generation and builds brand reputation without overreaching their budget.

The results that I can help a B2B business can achieve will vary. It depends on wide range of factors including: how competitive your industry is, how sophisticated your brand is, how well-known your brand is among your target audience already, how much activity you pay for, and what objectives you want to prioritise. However, when you start working with me, some KPIs will be agreed so that you can see what progress is being made.
Herkess was established to help B2B businesses that want to grow. You absolutely don't need to have much knowledge about marketing. You just need to have a good understanding of your business, industry, and your company's short and long-term ambitions.
Ideally, it should be somewhere between the two. Before Herkess starts working with a new client a free marketing audit will be done. This will give both parties some guidance on what the business's marketing strengths and weaknesses are. We'll then discuss what your priorities are and hatch a plan of action together.
